Who this page is for

This page is for people with a criminal or traffic case in Pioneer Justice Court, and for their families. Most of these cases come from San Tan Valley and the Pinal County side of Queen Creek. That includes driving under the influence arrests, domestic violence related charges, shoplifting and other theft, assault, drug possession, and criminal traffic charges such as reckless driving or driving on a suspended license.

We practice criminal defense only. We do not handle civil lawsuits, evictions, small claims, or family court custody cases.

Quick answer: what Pioneer Justice Court is

Pioneer Justice Court is a Pinal County justice court. It is also called JP1 Pioneer, sometimes shown as JP1 Pioneer San Tan or JP1 Pioneer (San Tan Valley). All of those names refer to the same court.

Pioneer Justice Court serves the citizens of San Tan Valley and parts of Queen Creek in Pinal County. San Tan Valley is an unincorporated community, so it does not have its own city court. Many cases that start there land in Pioneer Justice Court instead.

What cases Pioneer Justice Court handles

Arizona justice courts are courts of limited jurisdiction. A justice court like Pioneer hears:

Misdemeanors. Every type of state law misdemeanor, including shoplifting, assault, disorderly conduct, underage drinking, and violations of an order of protection.

Driving under the influence. Misdemeanor driving under the influence cases, including extreme driving under the influence.

Criminal traffic. Charges such as reckless driving, excessive speed, and driving while a license is suspended or revoked.

Civil traffic. Ordinary traffic tickets that are not crimes.

Protective orders. Requests for orders of protection and injunctions against harassment.

Pioneer Justice Court is not San Tan Justice Court

This mix up is common, and some websites get it wrong. Pioneer Justice Court is in Pinal County. San Tan Justice Court is a separate court, one of the Maricopa County justice courts. The names sound alike, but they are different courts in different counties, with different prosecutors and different procedures.

Read the court name on your paperwork carefully. If it says Pioneer, your case is in Pinal County. If it says San Tan Justice Court or another Maricopa County court, bring that paperwork to us too. We handle cases in both counties.

Your first court date in Pioneer Justice Court

How your case starts depends on how it began.

If you were cited and released. When an officer issues a citation, your first court appearance is called an arraignment. At the arraignment, you enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or no contest. If you plead not guilty, the court sets a pretrial date.

If you were arrested and booked. Your first hearing is an initial appearance. The judge confirms your name and address, tells you the charges, and sets release conditions. In a felony case, the judge also sets a date for a preliminary hearing.

Do not miss a court date. Missing an arraignment will generally lead to a warrant for your arrest. You cannot ask for a delay by telephone.

Filing papers. Motions in Pioneer Justice Court must be filed on the correct forms and delivered in person or by mail. Motions sent by email will not be processed. If you hire us, we handle filings for you.

San Tan Valley and Queen Creek cases

Most Pioneer Justice Court cases come from San Tan Valley. Our San Tan Valley criminal defense attorney page covers the charges we handle for San Tan Valley clients and the other courts that may hear those cases.

Queen Creek sits on the line between Maricopa County and Pinal County. A Queen Creek case on the Pinal County side may be heard in Pioneer Justice Court. A case on the Maricopa County side goes to a Maricopa County court instead. Your paperwork controls.

What to bring to your free consultation

Bring your citation or complaint, the court date and court name, your release conditions, any notice from the Motor Vehicle Division, and any property or tow receipts. If you were tested for alcohol or drugs, bring any paperwork about the test. A short timeline of what happened, written while it is fresh, also helps.
